Steel channel gates are metal structures designed and manufactured by our company for controlling water levels, regulating flow, or intercepting water in rivers, canals, reservoirs, and hydraulic projects. Unlike cast iron gates, steel gates utilize welded steel plates, allowing flexible design of dimensions, structure, and load-bearing capacity to meet the flow control requirements of large and medium-sized hydraulic structures. They are primarily used in applications where structural strength, span, or head requirements are critical.

  • Structure and Working Principle
  1. Core structural composition

The equipment is a welded steel structure, with the following main components:

  • The portal structure is a grid system composed of panels, secondary beams, main beams and side beams, which is the main body of water pressure bearing.
  • Walking support system: the guide and load-bearing component for gate movement.
  • Sliding bearing: using composite material slider on the track.
  • Fixed wheel bearing: using the roller on the track to reduce the friction resistance.
    • The embedded parts, including the main track, reverse track, sill and lintel, are embedded in the civil structure to install the gate and form the water-tight surface.
    • Waterstop system: A rubber waterstop strip (e.g., P-type or Ω-type) is installed around the door leaf and pressed against the waterstop seat plate on the embedded part to achieve sealing.
    • The opening/closing connection device is connected to the hoisting type, screw type, or hydraulic type hoisting system via lifting lugs and pull rods, and receives operational commands.
  1. Working Principle

The gate is installed in the door slot of the gate pier. When operating the hoist, the door leaf structure is vertically raised or lowered along the track within the door slot through traction (or pushing) by steel wire rope, screw rod, or hydraulic cylinder.

  • Closed state: The door leaf descends to the bottom sill, with surrounding water stops compressed and sealed to cut off the water flow.
  • On state: Door leaf lifts, opening the flow channel. Adjust the flow rate by controlling the lifting height.

Core technical features

Structural Design and Load Capacity: The steel plate welded structure can be customized according to water pressure and orifice size, with the potential to bear heavy water loads. It is suitable for projects with large spans and high water head.

Support types are available: sliding support and fixed wheel support. Fixed wheel support converts sliding friction to rolling friction, helping to reduce the opening and closing force.

Waterstop type: Rubber waterstop is usually used, and its sealing performance is related to the elasticity of the material and the installation accuracy.

Corrosion protection: Steel surfaces typically require long-term anti-corrosion treatment. Common solutions include heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings or hot-sprayed metals (e.g., zinc or aluminum) with a sealing coating, designed to enhance durability in humid environments.

Customized design: Thanks to its welding process, it offers high flexibility in shaping, sizing, and structural details.

  • Agricultural irrigation: the gate at the head of the main canal and the branch canal in large irrigation area.
  • Hydropower Engineering: The flood discharge gate, diversion gate, and tailrace gate of the hydropower station.
  • Municipal and environmental engineering: Inlet and outlet control gates for urban floodgates, large-scale sewage treatment plants, or pumping stations.
